more about our space

  • Over 40 acres of solitude tucked in the hilltowns of the western Massachusetts Berkshires in Chesterfield, MA -- boasting warm sunrises over the distant hills, lush forest for hiking and meandering river frontage on Bronson Brook and walking distance to the Westfield River to wade and soak in the cool mountain water or fish for native trout! We have over a mile of beautiful trails that were created around the main home -- a local architect designed masterpiece boasting a wonderful asian influe mcvnce yet handcrafted from the very timberstock off the land on which it sits lending a refined rustic twist. 25 Min to Northampton and 10 min to the Berkshires! You can hike or bike to the best swimming holes around. Come escape and breathe in our cool clean mountain air :)

  • The Chesterfield Gorge is just down the road and there are many spots to swim along the Westfield River. There is also a swimming hole near the house that we can show you. Farther away spots include Ashfield Lake and Chapel Brook Falls.

We also have a wood-fired hot tub that can be heated up for the weekend at an extra charge if folks are interested. The hot tub seats 5 ppl at a time and is right near the outdoor deck. Since it is wood-fired, the process takes 5 hours to heat, so we’ll need to know at least 48 hours in advance if you would like to reserve it.

  • Address:

    702 Main Road, West Chesterfield.

    Coming by Car:

The nearest gas stations are 15-20 minutes away, so please fill up before arriving! Cumberland Farms in Williamsburg, MA is east of us and the closest at 15 minutes. If you’re coming from the West then we recommend filling up at Friendly Fred’s in Windsor (20 minutes), but they close at 5pm. If you’re coming from the North, there’s an Exxon in Ashfield, MA (20 minutes).

From NYC / Upstate NY / Philadelphia driving to Atland: Your GPS might try to take you through Hartford, but we highly recommend adding “Pittsfield” or “Ghent/Chatham, NY” as a stop so that you end up taking the Taconic and going through Worthington, MA for a more beautiful route.  It's much prettier, trust us :) We’re located on Rt. 143/Main Road in Chesterfield… look out for the 702 road marker, and take the driveway up to the top and you’ll see the main house.

From Boston to Atland: Take MA-2 W… if you add “Millers Falls, MA” as a stop on your route, it’ll take you through this northern more scenic route. You can avoid the big highways and semis. We recommend avoid taking the I-90 W route.

Basic directions from Northampton/Hartford/Springfield to Atland:  Take Rt. 91 NORTH to Massachusetts Exit 25 (old Exit 19) - Head straight onto Damon Road, following signs for Rt. 9 WEST - Continue straight onto Bridge Road and follow until it ends at a traffic circle / intersection Rt. 9 - Take the first exit off the traffic circle onto Rt. 9 WEST - Travel ~5 miles to Williamsburg town center.

Once you pass through Williamsburg, turn left onto Rt. 143, which is Main Road.  You'll then see the "Entering Chesterfield" sign and the Town Hall will be on your left at North Road.  If you keep going on Rt. 143/Main Road, the entrance to Atland (702 Main Road) will be on your right after you pass Westfield River and Ireland Street. You’ll see a road marker with "702" at the end of the drive. Drive up the quarter mile driveway to the large deck where you can park under. You can also park out front the lower garage area.

    Coming By Train:

If you’re coming from Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City, New Haven, Hartford, Brattleboro, Montpelier, Burlington: take the Amtrak Vermonter train! The Northampton, MA Amtrak Train Station is only 20ish minutes from Atland. An uber/lyft can get you to Atland, or coordinate with us to pick you up/drop you off.

    Coming by Plane:

The closest airport to fly into is Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut (50 min away). It’s very small and easy to get around, security is quick to get through as well. The second closest airport is Albany, NY (1.5 hrs away). An uber/lyft can get you to Atland from Hartford. Uber/Lyft will not come to Atland to take you to the airport though!

  • We don’t allow guests who are not a part of the rental group unless you get approval from us ahead of time.

  • Cell Service is spotty in the hilltowns, only AT&T works at the house. But luckily we have fast WiFi, so you can connect to WiFi calling and you won’t miss any calls/texts. Or you can take the chance to unlpug and not connect to service or internet, up to you!

  • The Bronson Brook alongside the property is a great place to fish for trout - and less than a mile away is the beautiful Westfield River, with some of the best angling and swimming holes in New England. Or, explore the nearby Rivulet Trail, located across from the William Cullen Bryant Homestead 10 minutes away in Cummington. This pocket of pristine forest is one of the very last Old Growth Forests in Massachusetts, and is an easy and enjoyable hike any time of year.

You'll hear and might even see owls, turkey, a variety of kestrels, phoebes, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, crows, ravens, warblers, bluebirds, vireos, goldfinches, blue jays, cedar waxwings, quail. We aim to steward the biodiversity of the beautiful land we live upon, by sharing it peacefully with all our animal neighbors and keeping it undiminished and pristine.

You may also come across chipmunks, flying squirrels, deer, red and gray foxes, turtles, skunks, and porcupines. Very rare spottings include - bear, moose, coyote or bobcat - roaming in the fields and forest all around you. These animals have been here longer than we have, and we feel it is there home as much as ours, and so we welcome and work to live in harmony and peace with them.
